WRITE TO SET IT RIGHT

S. Bose, Andheri

From Westside Plus, 25th February 2005

As a tool of democracy, the age-old adage of pen being mightier than the sword finds takers in AGNI, a local group in Andheri East. They are trying to inculcate the good old habit of writing formal letters among its members, to highlight an issue and get it heard by various government heads.

"Shoot it right away!" said James John, co-ordinator, AGNI K-East while conducting one such meeting at the Holy Family Church.

"Instead of approaching a third person with a problem, take the initiative and do it yourself. First, be confident and write to the authorities," comments the seasoned activist. He continued further, "If you don't get any reply, then follow it with a second letter and subsequently with the third one.

Bombard the authority with letters till you don't get any reply," said James. "Just keep a record of the dates and the means by which you are dispatching the letter."

Ravi Nair, a member of AGNI and Savla ALM can be cited as an example. His letters brought much difference to the Chiman Pada area where he lives.

A new convert to letter writing, Ravi's persistent letter writing to the authorities has done wonders. "I have, so far, written on eight various issues pertaining to the BMC.

A minimum of six reminders followed. Some of them got replied, while others fell on deaf ears but I continued," declared an unyielding Ravi.

"On a couple of occasions, the civic officials came to my home in response to my letters and assured me that the grievance will be eradicated." Ravi recounted the improvements in the area's storm water drains, water leakage and the chronic garbage brought about by persistent letter writing.

"A letter was also replied by the commissioner when a problem was put to him," said Ravi, who's quite keen to increase his tribe in letter writing.

In the meantime, James John, co-ordinator of AGNI K-East expressed his desire to personally take up training programme for tutoring masses into the art of writing letters and its correct format.

"Let more people start writing letters than just resign to the situation or approach others to solve a problem that can be solved easily by him or her. It works like a missile."
